Arbor & Sens: The Fontainebleau Arboretum

Nestled in the heart of the Fontainebleau forest, Arbor & Sens is a scenic and educational arboretum close to the Franchard Gorges. Covering 21 hectares, it offers visitors a peaceful space to learn about trees, with an easy trail that highlights biodiversity. Accessible for everyone, including those with disabilities, Arbor&Sens provides a sensory experience through informative signs, interactive displays, and mobile apps for audio guidance.
History of the Arboretum
The arboretum was created in 1973 after a major fire damaged sections of the forest near Franchard. Thousands of trees were replanted, including both native and exotic species. Although initially closed to the public, it was re-imagined in 2015 by the National Forest Office (ONF) as a learning space. Over time, invasive species were removed, and trails were redesigned to highlight and preserve local plant life, creating the "Arbor & Sens" trail. Today, the arboretum is part of the Fontainebleau “Forêt d’Exception” program, focusing on education and accessibility.
What to Expect
The main trail stretches about 1.5 km and includes over 40 signs and interactive markers, available through the Balade Branchée app. Visitors can learn about the origins, uses, and stories behind different tree species. For example, resin from pear trees is used in sunglasses, and birch is called the "tree of newlyweds." The app enriches the experience with audio guides, geolocated information, and tree facts.
Accessibility for All
Arbor&Sens is designed for people of all abilities. The trail includes Braille and raised information boards, sandstone paths for secure footing, and an “Ariadne’s Thread” guiding rope for those with limited vision. The ONF has collaborated with local associations to ensure that the arboretum is accessible, especially to visitors with visual impairments.
Exploring with Mobile Apps
Previously there were three mobile apps and audio guides to narrate the journey but some of these appear to be not available anymore. The site Arbor and Sens guide is still available on Balade Branchée for Apple and Andriod but it appears to be only in French.
Featured Tree Species
Visitors will encounter trees from around the world, such as the Atlas cedar, European spindle tree, common juniper, Himalayan pine, and birch. The trail teaches about the unique uses and symbolic meanings of these species.
