Bois-le-Roi
Bois-le-Roi is a commune in the Seine-et-Marne department, in the Île-de-France region of France. It is located on the edge of the Fontainebleau Forest, along the left bank of the Seine River, opposite the town of Chartrettes.
The commune is known for its protected natural areas, including the Fontainebleau and Gâtinais biosphere reserve, established in 1998, which covers 150,544 hectares. This area is rich in biodiversity, encompassing agricultural land, the iconic Fontainebleau Forest, and the Seine Valley. The reserve is managed by an association with both scientific and educational councils.
Bois-le-Roi is also part of the Natura 2000 network, which aims to preserve natural habitats and species. The Fontainebleau Massif, located in the commune, is the oldest protected natural area in France and is renowned for its rich biodiversity.
History
Historically, the village was mentioned in 1260 and hosted the first permanent horse racing track in France in 1776, inaugurated by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette.
