Bourron Marlotte

Bourron-Marlotte is a village in the Seine-et-Marne department of Île-de-France, with 2,762 residents as of 2021. It is located just south of Fontainebleau, between the Fontainebleau Forest and the Loing River, and is 25 kilometers from Melun.

History

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with finds like rock engravings, ancient stone tools, and pottery pieces, including the famous “Bourron Vase” dating back around 4000 BCE, now displayed at the Prehistory Museum in Nemours. Evidence of a Roman presence includes brick foundations, Roman coins, and iron and bronze tools found near the castle and church.

In the Middle Ages, Bourron had its own church and a feudal fortress built by the local lords, the Sires of Bourron, who were loyal to the French kings. In 1234, Berruyer de Bourron hosted King Louis IX (later Saint Louis) before his wedding in Sens.

In the late 16th century, François de Sallard replaced the old fortress with a more modern château, which still stands today. Marlotte, once a small hamlet, became popular in the 19th century among artists drawn by its charm and proximity to the Fontainebleau Forest. The painter Alfred Sisley settled there in 1865, capturing village life in his work.

Later in the century, Bourron-Marlotte became a favorite spot for musicians, writers, and artisans, adding to its reputation as a cultural retreat.
