Cély
Cély, or Cély-en-Bière, is a village in Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, with 1,241 residents as of 2021. The Château de Cély was built in the 1430s by Jacques Cœur, an influential French merchant who traded with the Levant. In 1899, a tramway connected Melun to Barbizon, and by 1910, Cély was also connected via the "Tacot" line, providing easy travel to Melun until the tramway closed in 1938.
In the 19th century, Cély had around 500 people and focused on fruit farming, especially cherries. Administratively, it joined the Perthes canton in 1972, and since 2014, it’s part of the Fontainebleau canton. Formerly part of the “Pays de Bière” community until 2017, Cély now belongs to the Fontainebleau agglomeration. The village is often called "Cély-en-Bière," though official records use "Cély."
