Garentreville

Garentreville is a small village in the Seine-et-Marne department, Île-de-France region, within the Gâtinais Français Regional Natural Park. It lies 41.6 km from Melun, 28.3 km from Fontainebleau, and 12.4 km from Nemours.
The village has a long history, with its first human settlements dating back to the Neolithic period. Fortifications were built during the Hundred Years’ War, though only the path “Behind the Moats” remains as a marker of these walls. Garentreville's Saint-Martin Church, rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 16th and 17th centuries after damage from the Hundred Years’ War and religious wars, has a typical Gâtinais-style belfry.
Historically focused on vineyards and wheat, Garentreville has kept its agricultural roots. Spanish writer and politician Jorge Semprún owned a house here and is buried in the local cemetery alongside his wife.
Covering 6.4 km², the village has 117 residents, with a recent population increase of 48.1% since 1999. The community is led by Mayor Jean-Luc Racinet (2020-2026) and is part of the Communauté de communes Pays de Nemours. For administrative services, residents can visit the town hall on Rue de l'École.
