History
The first organized horse races in the Fontainebleau area took place on November 11, 1776, during the reign of King Louis XVI. These races were inspired by British horse racing traditions and were organized by the Comte d'Artois and the Duc de Chartres. The races were held near the royal hunting grounds, with a special grandstand built for the king and queen.
Horse racing in Fontainebleau was interrupted in 1778 due to war between France and England, and again during the French Revolution. Although Napoleon Bonaparte supported horse racing in France, Fontainebleau was not among the locations selected for new racecourses in the early 19th century.
In 1860, young horse-riding enthusiasts organized races in the La Solle Valley, which had recently been cleared for military exercises. The quality of the terrain impressed attendees, and by 1862, a public fundraising effort at the Fontainebleau Town Hall led to the creation of the Société des Courses de Fontainebleau. The racecourse was officially inaugurated on June 22, 1862, in the presence of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. An estimated 30,000 spectators attended the event, including 4,000 who traveled from Paris by train.
