La Genevraye

La Genevraye is a village in Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, located along the right bank of the Loing River and its canal. It is 31.4 km from Melun, 14.9 km from Fontainebleau, and 8.7 km from Nemours.

The area holds significant prehistoric landmarks, including the Pleignes burial site, part of a line of six ancient megaliths that align northwest, with others nearby like the menhir of Chevannes and Pierre Levée du Moque Baril.

The village’s notable Saint-Martin Church, an isolated medieval gem built on a 69-meter hill, overlooks the Loing Valley. Father Philippe, a former resident at the Carmelite convent in Avon, described it as a beautiful piece of medieval art that artists often seek to capture. With its unique setting, the church stands as one of Gâtinais's finest monuments, enduring for over 800 years. Its old bell continues to ring across the valley, echoing the area’s heritage.

La Genevraye is part of the Nemours district, with a population that enjoys its picturesque landscape and historical richness.
