La Madeleine-sur-Loing

La Madeleine-sur-Loing, a charming rural village in Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, lies about 40.6 km from Melun and only 8 km from Nemours. With around 400 residents, it offers a high quality of life thanks to its beautiful countryside setting and nearby transport links, including Souppes-sur-Loing and Nemours train stations and quick access to the A77 and A6 highways.

The village spans 616 hectares, bordered by a plateau to the west and the Loing Valley to the east, with neighboring communes Bagneaux-sur-Loing and Château-Landon. The area includes the main village, the Nozent Valley, and three hamlets: La Groue, Le Colombier, and Corbeval, the latter partly extending into Bougligny.

Cultural events such as the July 14 fair, a September yard sale, and a Christmas celebration are held with support from the Municipal Committee of Festivities, fostering a strong community spirit.

The village’s historic Church of Sainte Marie Madeleine, built in early Romanesque style, dates back to the 12th century and features a unique “triumphal arch.” Several historical artifacts are preserved here, including 15th-16th century funerary slabs, a rare 17th-century crucifix, and two 19th-century pews.

Noteworthy historical sites include the cross hosannière in the cemetery and remnants of the Glandelles chapel. The village also has several ancient polishing stones, discovered recently. Madeleine-sur-Loing’s stone quarries have supplied materials for notable structures like the Arc de Triomphe and Sacré-Cœur. Visitors can also explore the scenic towpath along the Loing River, ideal for walking or cycling.
