A Unique Location
The museum is harmoniously integrated into its natural surroundings, featuring pine, oak, birch, and acacia trees, and dramatic sandstone formations. Designed by renowned architect Roland Simounet, the building combines concrete and glass to blend with the forest and rocks around it. Opened in 1981, the museum’s architecture itself is a tribute to the prehistoric environment, and the structure has been listed as a Historic Monument since 2002.
The Exhibition Experience
The museum’s exhibition takes visitors on a chronological journey through Prehistory. Its galleries are organized around garden patios that recreate the flora of different prehistoric periods. Large glass windows connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, while displays include detailed reproductions of archaeological excavation sites, such as Pincevent and Étiolles, showcasing how artifacts were discovered.
Highlights of the collection include:
- Tools and objects used by prehistoric communities.
- A Carolingian-era wooden boat found in the Seine River.
Interactive displays and temporary exhibits throughout the year enrich the experience, catering to families, school groups, and individuals.
