Chaintreaux

Chaintreaux is a small village in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Île-de-France region in France, with 923 residents known as Chanterelliens and Chanterelliennes. The village covers 23.9 km², with a population density of 38.6 people per km², showing a population increase of 17.6% since 1999. Located 12 km southeast of Nemours, Chaintreaux borders Remauville, Paley, and Égreville.

History

The name "Chaintreaux" comes from the word "chaintre," meaning "boundary," as the village lay at the edge of several medieval estates. The area first saw settlement in the Gallo-Roman era and later became a parish in the Middle Ages, with land owned by the leper colony of Néronville, the abbey of Cercanceaux, and other lords.

The village church, Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul, dates to the 13th century and features tombstones, medieval frescoes, and a 1616 altarpiece of Saint Hubert. Another site, a large 12th-century farmhouse in the hamlet of La Brosse, retains original medieval windows and an ancient well.

Lagerville, once part of the powerful Villebéon family’s holdings, merged with Chaintreaux in 1842. Its Saint-Eutrope church, built in the 13th century and originally dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, was a site for pilgrimages to heal throat ailments. A cemetery beside it includes graves from the 18th and 19th centuries.
