Chailly-en-Bière
Chailly-en-Bière is a small town in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Île-de-France region in France, with a population of 2,118 as of 2021. Located near the edge of the Fontainebleau Forest, it has historical ties with the Barbizon art movement, a notable group of landscape painters who worked in the nearby hamlet of Barbizon, once part of Chailly.
History
The town’s history traces back to the Middle Ages, when Adam de Chailly established the noble house of Chailly. Throughout the Hundred Years’ War, local lords like Guilbault and Denis de Chailly played significant roles, with Denis even defending Melun alongside Joan of Arc. For his service, Denis was awarded judicial rights over Chailly-en-Bière by King Charles VII.
In the modern era, the area attracted famous painters, including Jean-François Millet and Théodore Rousseau, who depicted Chailly’s landscapes. Monet and Bazille also spent time here, fostering an art movement that lasted from around 1825 to 1875. Eventually, Barbizon became a separate town in 1903.
From 1899 to 1938, a local tramway, known as the "Tacot," connected Chailly to Melun and Milly-la-Forêt, facilitating travel and the transport of local produce like carrots, asparagus, and cherries to markets in Melun and Paris.
